2026 5th Jeju Biennale Heokkeukgok Modakchigok Iyahong: The Art of Transformation

Civilization that blossomed on Jeju, a volcanic island on the Eurasian Plate, arrived not only through the sea but also from the northern mainland world. All kinds of elements scattered and gathered in Jeju, mixed together, and transformed, creating the ecology, geography, and way of life of Jeju today. In its 10th year, the 5th Jeju Biennale focuses on the process in which Jeju, in contact with northern civilization, disperses (Heokkeuda), gathers (Modakchida), and transforms (Iyahong). For this, the Biennale takes the refrain 'Iyahong' from Iyahong Taryeong, which flowed in from the mainland and became another indigenous folk song of Jeju, as both its keyword and core concept. Through Jeju, where the principles of climate and sustenance reside, the Jeju Biennale seeks to present the ways of survival and the aesthetics shaped together by things and nature, human life and divinity.
